Bright Futures: Teaching and Adopting
Energy Efficiency in Schools

Room: 212
Time: 3:00pm – 4:00pm

K-12 schools account for nearly 10% of energy used by commercial buildings in the U.S., creating a major opportunity for sustainable behavioral change and energy efficiency. By integrating education, operational improvements, and strategic energy planning, schools can cut energy use, lower costs, and inspire sustainable practices across their communities.

This session highlights K-12 energy and sustainability curriculum that helps educators engage students in energy stewardship at school, home, and in their communities. Attendees will explore cost-effective strategies to identify and fund energy efficiency projects, often achieving 10–20% monthly savings. The session also covers free resources, cash incentives, and financing options to stretch school budgets and support essential services.

Participants will learn about Strategic Energy Management (SEM) programs and how participation can enhance sustainability efforts and support long-term goals. Case studies from Southern California schools will demonstrate the impact and value of investing in energy education and efficiency.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Leave with the knowledge of two offerings that align with education standards and are hands-on, STEM-focused.
  • Leave with next steps in the enrollment process for Energy is Everything program offerings, and how to reach program staff to support implementation
  • Be able to identify at least 3 common energy efficiency measures at most district/school facilities that can yield a minimum of 10% energy savings
  • Be able to identify at least 2 funding and financing opportunities that can be utilized to fund energy efficiency projects at district/school facilities

Speakers:

Siria Salas, Program Manager, The Energy Coalition
Michelle Bunn, Program Manager, Southern California Regional Energy Network
