K-12 Decarbonization: All-Electric Case Studies
Room: 214
Time: 3:00pm – 4:00pm
All-electric building systems are increasingly encouraged by energy codes and other state & local policies aimed at reducing emissions from the built environment, improving indoor air quality, and increasing community resilience. However, there remain some barriers to implementing electrification in the K-12 sector, particularly in existing buildings. Southern California Edison recently produced a book of Case Studies examining projects which have successfully pursued all-electric systems. This session will share the learnings from this new resource, providing in-depth examples of how project teams managed to upgrade their space heating, water-heating, and foodservice equipment to efficient electric options.
The presentation will include discussion of LAUSD’s long-term plan to electrify its campuses. The book is available for free download here: https://calbem.ibpsa.us/resources/case-study-books/
Overcoming institutional barriers to implementing carbon-neutral solutions is critical for a district’s long-term sustainability success. The projects described in this new case study book provide key insights about how to overcome those challenges on the path toward electrification.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Outline the benefits of electrification for a district and understand why schools are a compelling use case
- Discuss why the K-12 sector in CA has been slower to adopt electrification than some other building types and other parts of the country.
- Review case studies of K-12 projects in different California climate zones which have successfully electrified
- Develop a roadmap for retrofitting existing building stock and new construction projects, using the Los Angeles Unified School District as an example.
Speakers:
Dave Intner, Architect, Southern California Edison
Sustainability & Facilities Lead, LAUSD
