Designing Regenerative Sustainable Schools and School Districts

Room: 207
Time: 10:30am – 11:30am

Why do some sustainability plans fail when circumstances change? How come some sustainability plans cease to exist as soon as the superintendent leaves, the teacher champion retires, or the budget needs to be cut? Come to this session to find out how to design sustainability plans that continue to generate new leaders, ideas, and long-term solutions long after the initial designers are gone.

The session will highlight common elements in regenerative sustainability planning with real world examples taken from California school districts.

You should attend this session if you are interested in creating regenerative sustainable schools and school districts. In the session, participants will learn how to develop sustainability plans that address all four impact systems. They will also see examples of sustainability plans that regenerate new leaders, new ideas, and long-term solutions related to sustainability over time. This session will highlight real world success stories and cautionary tales from several California school district sustainability efforts over the past fifteen years. Ideas for how to create a regenerative sustainability plan and what to include in that plan will be shared in the session.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Participants in this session will learn to identify the four impact areas of change that need to be addressed in any sustainability plan.
  • Participants will review real world examples of successful district regenerative sustainability plans as well as examples of sustainability plans that are no longer being followed. Differences between the plans will be highlighted.
  • Participants will learn how to connect facility sustainability planning with environmental literacy planning.
  • Participants in this session will receive training in how to develop a regenerative sustainability plan that will continue to grow over time.
