Southwest Already Experiencing Climate Change Impacts

As detailed in the recently published National Climate Assessment, the Southwest region of the U.S. is already experiencing effects from climate change. “The region has heated up markedly in recent decades, and the period since 1950 has been hotter than any comparably long period in at least 600 years,” the authors note.

The pressures that this temperature increase is bringing to bear on the nation’s hottest and driest region will be exacerbated by the 68 percent increase in population that is projected for the Southwest between now and 2050.
