Special Pre-Summit Event:
ZNE Schools Workshop

Tuesday, November 4
Pasadena Convention Center
Ballrooms A & B
12:30 pm-4:30 pm

More and more, schools are pursuing zero energy building goals as a means of demonstrating leadership, innovation, and savings in cost and energy efficiency. Join us to learn how the education sector is leading the market in zero energy buildings and California’s aggressive goals around these extremely high performing buildings. The K-12 Zero Energy Schools workshop will feature case studies of schools with zero energy design goals and performance, tools and exercises to help plan and advocate for ZNE buildings internally, and resources for creative financing, planning, and integrating curriculum into new school buildings and retrofits. The four-hour workshop is designed to be interactive with an opportunity to connect with peers. The intention is to raise general awareness about concepts relative to zero net energy and provide specific tools that the attendees can take back and apply.

Participants will include facilities managers, design consultants, faculty, decision-makers, K-12 school leaders, and sustainability advocates. Speakers will include: Diane Greuneich, internationally recognized energy expert and former Energy Commissioner with the California Public Utilities Commission discussing Prop 39 opportunities for energy efficiency in existing schools, John Diffendorfer, architect for the Campbell school districts on their approach to develop eight new zero energy schools, and Peter Turnbull on PG&E’s ZNE pilots and Sacred Heart School library. Hear about creative financing approaches from Marika Erdely from EconoMe and from Heather Flint and Ralph DiNola at New Buildings Institute on new research, educational resources and planning tools to help schools meet California’s goals and coming requirements for zero energy schools. Join us to help you chart your own course to zero energy schools within your own school or district.
