The transportation sector accounts for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions in the state of California, accounting for 60 percent more emissions than the industrial sector. At 37 percent of total emissions, the contribution from the sector is well above the national average of 26 percent

On a global level, fossil fuels burned for road, rail, air, and marine transportation account for 14 percent of emissions. An estimated 95 percent of the world’s transportation energy currently comes from fossil fuels. Taking into account projections that the number of cars in the developing world could increase by as much as 557 percent by 2050this sector deserves close attention.
