California State Architect David Thorman, who co-chaired the Summit with Secretary of State and Consumer Services Rosario Marin and Secretary of Education Dr. David Long, welcomed attendees at the opening reception of the Summit.

"High performance schools will save money and preserve precious resources." he wrote in an editorial published before the Summit. "But greening our schools is about something even more important – it is about handing over an ideal of sustainability to our children."
