Buyers for the State of California, and other employees who specify and
procure goods and services, need information on environmentally preferable
purchasing (EPP). To fill this need, the DGS and CIWMB compiled a free,
accessible online resource written by subject matter experts: The
California Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Best Practices Manual.
The Best Practices Manual consists of over 40 chapters, beginning with an
introduction to the principles of EPP and a review of applicable state and
federal laws. This is followed by nearly 40 chapters, each devoted to a
different product category, which collectively cover most of the range of
state procurements.
Included in each chapter are the EPP attributes relevant to the category,
applicable laws and regulations, sources, product references, related
links, and success stories. It is entirely web-based, with extensive links
to a variety of other resources. The BPM promotes environmentally
preferable purchasing not only in California, but across the nation and
worldwide. The website and online BPM resource average around 700 hits
each month. Visitors are primarily from California; however, the website
is also accessed by people in other states as well as those in foreign
countries.
