By state mandate, organizations and individuals that manage California
public lands must work toward reducing climate-change emissions and
protect biodiversity, water quality and habitats. Cal Fire's award-winning
project targets these objectives by providing the first comprehensive set
of forestry sector protocols in the world for quantifying greenhouse gas
emissions and the reductions in emissions that result from forest
management. Development of the protocols focused on three key activities:
reforestation, changes in forest management, and conservation.
The project has resulted in two forest-based greenhouse gas reduction
projects in 2006 and has launched activities with anticipated reductions
of more than 2,000,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) over the lifetime of
the projects. The project benefits a variety of stakeholders, including
forest landowners, the general public, and entities involved in emerging
carbon markets. In the future, it is anticipated that more forest projects
will be undertaken and registered with the California Climate Action
Registry, leading to even greater reductions in CO2, progress toward
meeting the State's and Governor's greenhouse gas reduction targets, among
other public benefits.
