Green Information Technology Pavilion
Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a Pavilion dedicated to Information Technology Systems?
Most people in government have heard about the "green building" movement and are aware of the need to improve the environmental performance of buildings. What fewer people have thought about is the critical, and rapidly growing, role that Information Technology systems play in efforts to preserve the health of our natural environment.

What are the environmental issues associated with IT?
Today, IT systems consume a significant portion of the electricity used in commercial buildings, create demand for resource-intensive building space and infrastructure, and produce large volumes of hazardous "e-waste and "u-waste". Data centers now need as much power as large industrial facilities. In the future, IT can be a vital tool for improving the efficiency of building management, reducing the demand for new building space, and for displacing automobile and air travel.

Why do IT professionals and decision-makers need to learn about these issues?
The Governor and Legislature of California have set clear standards and goals for increasing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, properly managing e-waste and u-wastes, and purchasing environmentally preferable products. Those mandates will have significant effects on how state and local government will design, purchase, and manage IT systems.

What is the Green Information Technology Pavilion?
The Green Information Technology Pavilion will be a unique, integrated space dedicated to educating government decision-makers on the environmental issues associated with IT systems. It will be staffed by knowledgeable experts who are prepared to spend time discussing problems and solutions with attendees. There will also be product displays and demonstrations hosted by Pavilion sponsors. Click here to see a layout of the space. In the area around the Pavilion, other IT companies will be exhibiting their products in traditional booths. Click here to see the Pavilion layout.

What can attendees learn about in the Pavilion?
The basic idea of the Pavilion is that IT systems are connected networks that are an integral part of the built environment, not isolated parts separate from the rest of the workplace. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about how IT systems can effect green building design and management, Design for the Environment programs for building greener products, energy-efficient PCs, printers, and servers, wireless and converged voice/data products that enable new modes of working, alternative computing architectures that reduce power and materials consumption, new thinking on data center design for efficient power supplies and cooling, and responsible end-of-life product management.

Who are the sponsors of the Pavilion?
