Strand 1: Why "Go Green"?


Session Title
: The Cost of Green Building
Description: The attendee will walk away with an understanding of the financial impacts, as well as the financial benefits, of implementing sustainable practices into new construction and renovation projects for the educational sector.  Presenters will offer an in-depth look at the true cost of building green schools, through the combination of a cost database and a budgeting methodology for implementing sustainable design. This presentation will also utilize the landmark Davis Langon research studies to compare the cost of green buildings with conventional buildings.

Session Title: LEED for Schools: Benefits for Students, the Environment, and the Bottom Line
Description: Learn more about the new US Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Schools rating system, designed to improve students’ health, productivity and learning capacity while creating school buildings that are energy efficient and resource friendly. This session will show the  immediate and measurable impact on the health of the students, benefits to the educational system and the environment of LEED-rated schools.

Session Title:
Raising your IEQ: Indoor Environmental Quality and Student Performance

Description: Studies investigating classroom environmental conditions (IEQ) were conducted in two school districts that demonstrated an association between improved IEQ and academic performance. This presentation focuses on steps that schools can take to improve IEQ and the resultant benefits to the learning environment (associated student test scores) that can be expected.  In addition, attendees will learn the practical and economic aspects of what schools can do on their own to improve IEQ.

Session Title: Healthy Indoor Air by Design: A Seminar on GREENGUARD for Children and Schools
Description: This session, covering the basics of the GREENGUARD rating system for school interiors, will  communicate the importance of indoor air quality (IAQ) and empower educators and administrators to employ strategies to improve the IAQ in the spaces they are building, renovating or maintaining. The course also includes information on the impact of indoor air pollution on human health.

Description: One of the most successful Charter School organizations in California,  Green Dot Public Schools, has embraced the concept of sustainability. This presentation will explore how Green Dot has integrated sustainability into both its new construction projects and its ongoing educational program.

Description: This session makes the case for building green schools. Session Title: Keep it Clean:
Controlling Indoor Air Quality During Construction
Description: The utilization of temporary climate  control to maintain indoor air quality and specified moisture levels during construction will be discussed. Climate and moisture control reduces the threat of mold growth, maximizes performance of building materials, and prevents construction delays. Presenters will also address how climate control contributes to the LEED effort.

: High Performance Lighting and Electrical Systems Panel
Description: This presentation focuses on the numerous ways to build green schools through high performance lighting and electrical systems. We will discuss such topics as new advances in daylight harvesting, efficient lighting, reducing PVC in buildings, various methods of on site generation and simple energy saving construction methods.

Session Title: Why You Need a Landscape Architect for Your Green School
Description: Landscape architecture is a multi-disciplinary field, including within its fold geography, mathematics, science, engineering, art, horticulture, technology, social sciences, politics, history, and philosophy. Valuable contributions are often made at the earliest stage of a project by generating ideas and bringing flair and creativity to the use of outdoor space.

Session Title: Reducing CO2 Footprint with Peak Energy Reduction
Description: Electricity generation emission rates vary radically from peak to off-peak periods. This presentation will explain the methodology of quantifying emissions associated with the time specific energy use. Measures for reducing overall emissions using the time specific calculation method will be presented and compared with traditional energy efficient solutions.  The presenter will also discuss time specific emissions rates and short term mitigation measures for significantly managing and reducing a building's carbon footprint.

Session Title: Ambassador Hotel Site: Creating a Sustainable K-12 Campus for LAUSD
Description: A 4,200 student, K-12 campus is under construction at the site of the former Ambassador Hotel. The design team has integrated many “green” elements into the 23-acre facility, while also addressing the unique history of the site. These elements include thermal displacement ventilation, enhanced classroom acoustics, and strategically located daylighting.

Session Title: Case Studies in Sustainable School Design: Local Examples from the Public and Private Sectors
Description: This seminar explores three diverse examples of sustainable school design: a gold LEED rated child development center for Mother’s Club in Pasadena; a sustainable master plan for the Waldorf School campus in Northridge; and the first high performance CHPS project developed by the LAUSD – an elementary school in mid-Wilshire LA.

Session Title: El Segundo High School + CHPS: Models for Modernization and New Construction
Description: El Segundo Unified School District set out to modernize its high school and embraced CHPS standards to produce a showcase project. The project architect, engineer, and landscape architect describe how they applied sustainable principles to modernize six buildings, design a new music and science building, and a new campus environment.

Session Title: Strategies for Greening Existing Schools
Description: Presenters will discuss components of the CHPS and LEED rating systems that are the easiest to capture for existing buildings. Also covered will be relative costs for implementing these systems and potential yearly savings that will result.

Session Title: An Energy-Efficiency Makeover: Dinuba Unified School District
Description: Attendees will hear how thinking "outside the box" enabled one Central California school district to transform deteriorating buildings into more efficient facilities that not only save the district in annual energy expenses, but offer improved learning environments for students and teachers. Surprisingly, these improvements were financed not from school district funds but rather through the energy savings captured through the renovations, state rebates and creative financing.

Session Title: Greening the School Kitchen
Description: What does it mean to "green" a kitchen? The session will discuss how the LEED program relates to commercial kitchens and how the program is evolving to better fit food service operations. Session Title: “Designed” vs “Verified” - New CHPS Recognition Programs

Presenters will focus on CHPS Designed, a self-certification program, and CHPS Verified, a more robust verification program that can assist with obtaining incentive funding.

the School Building Process
Description: LAUSD’s  community engagement process has proven effective in over 150 school projects throughout diverse communities. The outcome has been communities educated on the complexity of school construction, and the creation of a broad support base. We will review the process of community engagement through  clearly defined points of decision-making.

Description: Panelists will present testimonials on how energy reduction starts with good design that translates to building operations. Session Title: Performance Contracting: Save while you Save

These systems will allow schools to reduce their carbon footprint and protect themselves from increases in energy costs.

Description: Think Energy is working with the Los Angeles Unified School District to expand the district's use of renewable energy. Session Title: Green Computers: Using EPEAT
Description: The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool is a new EPA-funded, easy-to-use tool to identify environmentally preferable desktop and laptop computers and monitors. The attendee will know how and where to purchase the greenest computers in the world, as well as find out how those computers can benefit the attendees and their institutions. Attendees will also find out what the eight categories of an EPEAT computer are, and how purchasing them will green the an institution's operations while benefiting its bottom line.

Session Title: Green FF&E: Selecting Sustainable Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment
Description: Indoor Environmental quality (IEQ) is a key factor that affects the health and productivity of students, faculty and administrators in Schools. Considering furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) are a major component of offices & classrooms, a procurement guide for the selection of sustainable FF&E that improves IEQ will be presented.  The examples presented will demonstrate strategies that can be used for selection and procurement of sustainable FF&E for schools.

We will address key indicators for indoor air quality that will help reduce absenteeism,  increase the bottom line and add  at least seven points towards LEED certification.

Session Title: “Green Sports”: Can Athletic and Recreation Facilities Reflect Sustainable Design?
Description: Integral to campus recreation buildings are the football and intramural fields, each containing a large amount of green space with little impervious surface, which may have a high water demand and require sustainable water management.  The presentation will identify unique challenges associated with storm water management and water use reduction.  Examples of these challenges and solutions achieved in school projects will be presented, along with strategies that can be applied when planning recreational and athletic facilities for schools with similar bio-climatic conditions.

Session Title: Zero-Down Energy Projects: New Finance Strategies
Description: Presenters will discuss how the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) makes energy efficiency upgrades and renewable energy projects a cost-effective option for schools, relieving facility managers and school boards from the burden of using limited school resources to finance new capital intensive equipment.  Presenters will discuss the advantages of the PPA model and how schools can benefit through the energy savings and pricing predictability provided by third-party system financing.

Session Title: A Living Library & Think Park: Transforming Schools & Communities
Description: A Living Library (A.L.L.) provides a content-rich, indoor/outdoor, learning landscape for all ages. Each unique Branch Living Library is created with students (PreK-16) and adults through hands-on, interdisciplinary, standards-based curricula, bringing math, science, history, language arts, arts, and technology subjects to life. Research, planning, design, implementation, use, maintenance, management, and communications become part of the learning experience. Living Libraries are linked through interactive communications technologies,  bringing diverse communities and ecologies together locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally.

Through gardening, they healthfully enjoy learning, appreciate beauty, and become thoughtful stewards of their environment.

Session Title: Energy Education: The Will Rogers Demonstration School
Description: International students at Will Rogers Middle School prepare podcasts, publications, and broadcasts about preserving and conserving natural resources. In partnership Premier Power-Solar and Vanir Construction, the ‘Energy Patrol’ broadcasts the California energy story from their solar powered studio.  Presenters will discuss student work samples (podcasts, publications, broadcasts, and activities) which are used to tell the energy story to others, about the benefits from partnerships, and how funding brings ideas to life.  Participants will learn more about conservation, production and broadcasting and how it relates to energy education.

Session Title: Student Energy Ambassadors: The ACE Program
Description: The Energy (ACE) program shows educators their role in helping today's students become tomorrow's environmental leaders through a project-based learning exposure to sustainability concepts.  Through the ACE program, K-12 students learn sustainability measures and auditing techniques, which they impart to their school, families, small business owners or seniors in their communities to help them improve their sustainability management.

Session Title: The Edison Challenge
Description: The Edison Challenge is a competition for middle and high school teams of students. The teams of up to six students and a teacher complete a community service project, prepare and teach a lesson plan, and submit a multimedia portfolio to win fabulous trips.  This session discusses the program and benefits to students.

Session Title: From Grease to Gas: Integrating Academic and Vocational Education
Description: Student projects to create biodiesel fuel from waste cooking grease not only result in the integration of science and technology education, but also the practical implementation of waste recycling, creation and use of alternative fuels and even reuse of process byproducts such as glycerin for mulch.
This presentation will provide information on how this program was developed, partnerships needed, required product materials, curriculum - both for large scale demonstration and focused classroom presentations -  and program funding opportunities.

Description: Presenters will share the Green Schools Dissemination Model initiated in Wisconsin, expanding to California, Colorado, Minnesota during 2007-08. The Green School Alliance was developed to support the establishment of green schools. Materials include an Environment Focused Curriculum, Teachers Academy, Field Study Guide, Student DVD, and Parent Green Practice Program.

Session Title: Go Global, Go Green in Elementary Schools
Description: Campus-wide activities centering on the theme "Earth Day Every Day" were held throughout the school year. Learn the structure, key principles, overarching goals, and activities to implement a school-wide plan l. Receive handouts, contact names, technology links, and activities from Laurence School representatives.

Session Title: Enhancing Environmental Literacy: The CREEC Network
Description: The California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network will help you find the resources you need to teach students about the environment. This session will give you tools to learn about field trips, teacher workshops/grants, regional calendars, standards-aligned curriculum, and community partners that support a green culture at your school or organization.

Session Title: Greening an Old Rural School: Lessons Learned
Description: How did an old, rural school become "green"? Meet with Superintendent/Principal Rusty Vardy to hear about and discuss how he redesigned both the facility and curriculum at Indian Diggings School (El Dorado County) and his many supportive partnerships, including a Project Learning Tree program. Examples will be discussed of student projects, learning centers, community involvement, grants and networks to support a green school.

Session Title: Teaching Green and Beyond to Future Architects
Description: This session aims to open a discussion about teaching sustainable architecture and related items to future generations of architects. The workshop opens with a discussion about which elements need to be developed  in future students in order to establish the correct base for implementing green design.
