Green Schools A to Z

New to green schools? Want to brush up on the basics of green, or "high performance," school facilities? This session will provide a comprehensive overview of the basic components of green school design and their benefits. Learn the fundamental principles and objectives that underlie any green school; how builders and school districts have achieved remarkable bottom line savings; and a sustainable approach to green operations. Success of green schools depends on creating a school-wide culture that recognizes and pursues sustainability, engaging students, faculty, operations staff, parents and the community. This session has it all! Presented by a panel moderated by Deborah Moore, executive director, Green Schools Initiative

How Do I Pay for This?
Proposition 1D and Other Funding Options and Strategies

Proposition 1D offers $100 million in high performance school incentive grants. Find out how to apply for these funds and learn about the wide range of strategies that exist to address the economic challenges involved in greening your schools. This session will provide concrete examples of the ways that these projects can be funded and assistance in identifying the strategies and funding sources that are best for you. Presented by a panel from the California Office of Public School Instruction moderated by Rob Cook, OPSC executive officer

How to Get Your Green School Built:
LEED for Schools and Green Schools Advocacy

Interested in making the case for green schools? This workshop will explore effective strategies for getting green schools built in your community and encouraging district-wide adoptions of green building standards. LEED for Schools offers a comprehensive tool for schools that wish to build green with immediate, measurable and certified results. This session will introduce USGBC's new green building rating system and provide the necessary tools and resources you need for effective green school advocacy in California and beyond. Participants in this workshop assess the needs and concerns of various stakeholders in school construction – from parents to facility planners, teachers to school boards – and work together to create a Green Schools Toolkit for effective advocacy and successful green school projects.
Presented by Rachel Gutter, Schools Sector Manager, US Green Building Council; co-presenters - Wendy Rogers, AIA, Principal, LPA Architects and Pauline Souza, AIA, Director of Green Services, WRNS Studio

Greening the Curriculum

Room 103
Wherever your school is on the road to becoming green, it can provide a context for achievement of key math, science and social science standards. Taking advantage of this opportunity requires an approach to instructional design that works backwards from the real world of your students' environment and uncovers the concepts, knowledge and skills that are at the heart of those standards. This session will walk you through that process, and give you the skills AND resources you need to take it back to your colleagues and implement it in your school.
Presented by Dave Hendry, President, Real Curriculum

LAUSD's Green Vision

LAUSD's Green Vision - Room 101
In 2001, the Los Angeles Unified School District was the first school district in the nation to commit to CHPS. Over the past seven years, the District has learned, often the hard way, what it takes to successfully implement a district-wide high performance schools initiative. The key has been to use CHPS as a tool to rethink how to deliver the best schools for students, staff and the community. This session will explore the lessons learned as well as the processes and tools developed by LAUSD and available to others to for use in your own program. Presented by panel from LAUSD moderated by Ying Wang, Program Manager - CHPS/Energy, School Planning and Design New Construction Branch, LAUSD
