Greening Schools for the Golden State:
2012 Green Schools Summit & Expo

Now in its sixth year, the annual Green California Schools Summit and Exposition will take place at the Pasadena Convention Center on September 27 and 28, 2012. Developed under the leadership of an Advisory Board chaired by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and State Architect Chet Widom, the Summit is the state’s largest annual gathering of green school leaders.

Through an Expo with over 100 companies offering green products and services,  a full educational program of workshops and concurrent sessions, and special events like its annual Leadership Awards, the Summit offers two days of total immersion in all aspects of green schools.

In schools across California, energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy programs and green building techniques are putting significant savings back into school districts’ general funds. At the same time, school gardens, recycling programs and green curricula are proliferating. Green schools are becoming the norm in California, and are fostering a culture of sustainability among students, faculty and communities.

Educational Opportunity
Educational sessions, workshops and special events at the Summit will address strategies for maintaining and growing this trend in the midst of tight finances and cutbacks. Past presenters have included a "who's who" of innovators and leaders from the state's green schools movement - and this year will be no different. The Summit provides a unique nexus, connecting school officials, teachers, administrators with the latest in technology, funding mechanisms, curriculum and best practices in school design and operations.

Green Curriculum Institute
For the second year, by strong demand, the Summit will include a full-day workshop on California’s landmark Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) curriculum. On September 28, the Green Curriculum Institute, for teachers, curriculum supervisors and other educators, will provide a hands-on introduction to the classroom use of the EEI’s 85 units, which are aligned with science and history-social science academic standards. A limited number of scholarships will be available for this event.

Two Summits at Once
The Summit is being held concurrently with the Green California Community Colleges Summit, with a single Expo serving both events. “The convergence of these two events last year offered a unique chance for green leaders from community colleges and K-12 schools to interact,” said Carl Smith, editor-in-chief of Green Technology, the organization that produces the summits. “We’re glad to be providing an opportunity for networking between sectors again this year.”

While the two conferences will each have their own education programs, attendees who register for educational sessions at one event will have access to the sessions, workshops and panels at both Summits. General session speakers will include Henry AJ Ramos, a member of the Board of Governors for the California Community Colleges system.

Leadership Awards
At a reception on September 27, the Summit’s popular Leadership Awards will be presented, recognizing achievements in categories ranging from green building and energy efficiency to curriculum. The awards were established by the Advisory Board to honor individuals and school districts on the leading edge of school sustainability.

“It’s remarkable that in good times and bad, and across the political spectrum, Californians remain committed to environmental preservation,” said Smith. “We won’t achieve our long-term goals without help and leadership from today’s students, and this Summit is intended to support the growth of programs and facilities that can inspire and engage them.”

Keynotes and exhibit hall are free. For information and to register, go to www.green-technology.org or call Cindy Dangberg at 626-577-5700.
