Investing in Our Future
2014 Green Schools and Community Colleges Summit & Expo

The 2014 Green California Schools Summit and Community Colleges Summit will take place at the Pasadena Convention Center on November 5-6. The Summit is the largest annual event focused on green programs in the nation’s largest K-12 system and higher education systems.

Through an Expo with over 100 companies offering green products and services, an educational program of workshops and concurrent sessions, and special events including a Leadership Awards reception, the Summit is a unique annual opportunity for public and private sector stakeholders to discover innovations in green policy, practice and technology.

The keynote speakers for the opening session on November 5 will be Rear Admiral Len Hering and Senator Fran Pavley. While serving as Commander of the Navy Region Southwest, Admiral Hering developed groundbreaking programs in energy, water and waste management, setting standards that influenced practices throughout the Department of Defense. He currently serves as Executive Director of the California Center for Sustainable Energy.

Before entering politics, Senator Pavley was a middle school teacher for nearly three decades. Perhaps best known as the author of the landmark Global Warming Solutions Act, she also authored legislation that led to the development of the nation’s first K-12 environmental literacy curriculum, the Education and the Environment Initiative. She currently serves as the Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.

Educational Opportunities
In schools across California, green building and energy programs are helping districts create healthy environments for students and recover money for their general funds. Curriculum and student engagement efforts are fostering a culture of sustainability among students, faculty and communities.

Dozens of concurrent education sessions will focus on critical topics, from best practices for utilizing Prop 39 energy efficiency funds to water conservation techniques, funding for energy and building projects and environmental literacy.

The Summit will also include a special Pre-Summit Zero Net Energy (ZNE) Schools Workshop, on November 4. This event, presented in partnership with the California Public Utilities Commission and the New Buildings Institute, will highlight the strategies necessary to achieve successful ZNE projects.

In addition to the Summit’s Advisory board, partners at the U.S. Green Building Council, CalRecycle, the Collaborative for High Performance Schools, the Green Schools Initiative, Strategic Energy Innovations, the Alliance to Save Energy, the State Allocation Board, the Metropolitan Water District, the Coalition for Adequate School Housing and others are assisting in the development of sessions that meet the needs of professionals in this sector.

Leadership Awards
At a reception on November 6, the Summit’s Leadership Awards will recognize achievements in categories ranging from green building and energy efficiency to curriculum. The awards were established by the Summit’s Advisory Board to honor individuals and school districts on the leading edge of school sustainability.

Advisors and Sponsors
The Advisory Board for the conference is chaired by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, State Architect Chet Widom, California Community College Deputy Chancellor Erik Skinner and Van Ton-Quinlivan, Vice Chancellor for Economic Development and Workforce Preparation.

Principal sponsors are American Modular Systems, Ferguson Heating and Cooling, Tremco, Harley Ellis Devereaux and Nexant.
