How to Achieve Grid Neutrality on your Campus

Description: This session will give a preview of the findings of the workshops sponsored by the Division of the State Architect. Governor Schwarzenegger directed the DSA in his Executive Order S-20-04 to encourage schools to be resource and energy efficient. These workshops focused on the components that make community colleges and K-12 schools grid neutral (i.e. "a site that produces at least as much electrical energy as it uses in a year") Topics include comprehensive planning, energy efficient design, energy generating technology, innovative funding, energy use measurement, and operations & maintenance.

Creating Culture Change: Living and Learning on a Green Campus

Description: Part One: Climate Engineering and Architecture Working Together-Dwindling resources and Climate change has caused the design community to develop innovative approaches to creating sustainable buildings. This session will focus on an integrated sustainable design process and provide specific examples. Part Two: Green Roofing at Community Colleges-Options and Considerations-Roofs can enhance the green aspects of buildings, if properly designed and installed. Options include cool roofs, roof-mounted photovoltaic systems, and vegetated (living) roofs. The green benefits, design tips, costs, maintenance considerations, and case studies will be discussed for each option.

Advancing the Green Energy Workforce: PG&E PowerPathway

Description: The availability of a qualified workforce will facilitate PG&E's attainment of the state's aggressive energy efficiency and renewable energy goals. PG&E launched a new workforce development program, PowerPathway, that brings together community colleges (to prep candidates on academic, physical, and soft skills) along with workforce development partners (to pre-screen and case manage candidates). The winning combination has received notice as a best practice with PowerPathway featured in Chartwell's Best Practices for Utilities & Energy Companies, POWER Magazine, EEI Electric Perspectives and other publications.

Description: The California Community Colleges have been very successful in becoming more environmentally and economically Sustainable through energy and resource efficient construction, rehabilitation, and operation of campus facilities. As budgets for public higher-education shrink, the Community Colleges have shown how energy efficiency can translate to life-cycle cost savings that free up dollars for the classroom. This presentation will focus on challenges and solutions from concept through construction and commissioning in order to build sustainable higher education facilities. There will be a showcase of several community colleges successes, and Best Practices presented by Community College leaders. Representatives from the Investor Owned Utilities will discuss the available technical assistance, policy recommendations, and incentive programs available to higher education customers, and the role that the CCC/IOU Energy Efficiency Partnership has played in helping campuses on the path to Sustainability. This presentation will also review: the California Community College Board of Governors' Sustainable Energy Policy; the current status of the CCC/IOU Partnership and the plans for the 2009-2011 program cycle; highlight the various utility programs available for energy efficient new construction design assistance, information systems technology efficiency, food service technology, emerging technologies, climate change programs, demand response, the California Solar Initiative and Self Generation Incentive programs.

New Climate Change Course Curriculum for Community Colleges

Description: Go Green LACCD is an interactive site with wikis and blogs for educators, counselors, and students interested in sustainable strategies in their communities. The site was developed by members of the Los Angeles Community College District's (LACCD) Administrative Leadership Program in collaboration with the LACCD Sustainable group. The Go Green LACCD site will become a living curriculum. It provides faculty, staff, and students, with resources and tips on how we can all live greener lives and do our part to reduce global warming. Features of the site include tips on how to live greener, information on recycling and green building projects throughout the Los Angeles Community College District. It is a great resource for faculty who are interested in developing green curriculum, and a guide for students interested in developing green fairs at their home campuses.

The Cost of Green Building

Engaging Students in Sustainability Issues Through Student Environmental Clubs

If California is to meet it ambitious sustainable development and renewable energy goals, Community Colleges will be called upon to play an integral role in the rapid expansion of the new energy economy by supplying the requisite, skilled workforce. Presenters from two community colleges and a community college district will provide information, tools, and resources they used to quickly develop green education and training programs.
